- Tesla Optimus: note — On the Q2 earnings call, Musk told investors that scaling Optimus production would be the hardest manufacturing challenge in Tesla's history, since there's no established supply chain and nearly every component is newly invented. He warned the initial phase may stall longer than expected, and Tesla's latest shareholder presentation has dropped references to mass production altogether. The gap from earlier promises is stark: Musk had previously said he'd be surprised if Tesla weren't making 100,000 robots a month within five years, and predicted meaningful production in 2026 — but has since conceded the Gen 3 units in Texas and Fremont are only collecting training data, not doing real work. The blockers: Hands. Musk says no robot company has managed to replicate the human hand, and Optimus needs that dexterity to be useful outside a factory. Silicon. Struggles with logic, memory and chip packaging leave Tesla dependent on TSMC and Samsung. Supply chain. Around 10,000 distinct components, with Tesla building its own production infrastructure from scratch — unlike Chinese rivals who can lean on existing smartphone-industry suppliers. Financial backdrop isn't helping: Q2 revenue rose 26% to $28bn, but adjusted EPS came in at 33 cents against a 51-cent consensus, and $6bn of quarterly capex drove free cash flow to negative $1bn. Part of Musk's comp package hinges on deploying one million robots within ten years; Tesla has retooled lines in Fremont and is building a dedicated factory in Texas, but gives no timetable, and Shanghai hasn't started robot production at all.
